Venerable Lady Passes Away as Result of Long Illness.

Mrs. Maria Carpenter passed away Monday afternoon at 4:20 O'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. E. Carpenter, at 320 Center Street, after an illness of nine weeks with general debility incident to age. The end came very peacefully and without suffering. Her last intelligible effort was to hum the tune of an old familiar hymn. She had lived a beautiful Christian life and was happy in the thought of soon being at rest.

Maria Cookingham was born in New York state on June 24, 1826, and was married in that state in 1845 to Henry Carpenter. They came west in 1865 and lived for 13 years at Fond du Lac. Then they removed to Bremmer County, Iowa, and lived there until 1885, when Mr. Carpenter passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. E. E. Carpenter, at Dowers Lake, Minnesota. The mother came to Wisconsin in 1897 and lived with her daughter at Waupaca and Buena Vista until a year ago, when she came here to reside with Mrs. Carpenter.

She was a bright, happy, active woman and had always enjoyed good health up to about nine weeks ago, when the final break down came. She may have had a slight stroke of paralysis.

She leaves five daughters and two sons. The children are Mrs. Edward Ehle of Waupaca, Sarah Jane of Fond du Lac, James H. of Parkersburg, Iowa, Mrs. A.C. Sams of Washburn, North Dakota, Mrs. W. A. Frickie of Raymond, Nebraska, George W. of Michigan, and Mrs. E. E. Carpenter of this city. She was the youngest child and last survivor in her own family.

The funeral will be held from the Carpenter residence on Center Street at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, Rev. Fred Link of the German M.E. Church officiating. The interment will follow in Forest Cemetery.

Her daughter, Mrs. Ehle, of Waupaca has been spending considerable time here assisting in her care. Other friends who will attend the funeral are Mrs. Alden Dutton of Waupaca, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Lane of Plainfield, Marshal Ehle of Medford, and Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Wirth of Milwaukee.

Mrs. Maria Carpenter passed away Monday afternoon, November 12, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. E. Carpenter, at the age of eighty years, five months and twelve days. She leaves five daughters and two sons. The children: Mrs. Edward Ehle of Waupaca, Sarah Jane of Fond du Lac, James H. of Parkersburg, Iowa, Mrs. A. C. Sams of Washburn, N. D., Mrs. W. A. Frickie of Raymond, Neb., George W. of Michigan; and Mrs. E. E. Carpenter of this city, in whose care the deceased had been for some time.

Mrs. Maria Carpenter, born Cookingham, was born in the state of New York on June 24, 1826, and was married in the above named state to Henry Carpenter in 1845. They came West in 1865 and lived at Fond du Lac and in Bremmer County, Iowa, until 1885, when death broke the happy bonds of matrimony by the passing away of the father and husband, leaving Mrs. Carpenter a widow for the remainder of her earthly days.

She always was a bright, happy, humorous, active woman. Even on her sick bed I noticed on my occasional visits, that tears and a quiet laugh would mingle at times on the faces of those surrounding her bed, by her jests and her persistent efforts to maintain her wonderful vitality. But through all this she displayed an earnest desire to be in peace with God when he comes.

She would pray earnestly and even sang some sacred songs at times. Her long and happy life should teach us this lesson, not to look continuously at the shady side of life, but, as she did, make the best of everything, and be useful and lead a Christian life, so that when the summons comes to us, which must come to all, we may pass away confident to hear the words of our Savior, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, thou has't been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter then into the joy of the Lord." -- Rev. Frederick Link, pastor of the German M. E. Church.
